A quick search tells me that the HP Compaq dx2300 has a "Realtek 8100C Fast Ethernet" chipset. Do you see that in the list of requirements? I don't, so it makes sense you get the error. You will have to insert a PCI or PCIe network card with a supported ethernet chipset.

Yes, but not just "a" PCI network card. Must be one with supported chipset.
