Hi Peter,
in a "normal" system you can make these steps.
1. you see no delete function in the subpalette to remove
2. uncheck the "Synchronize with directory" menu in the palette above (for the subpalette where you want to remove something)
3. the delete function is now available
Hope it helps.

Hi all,
I, too had problems with this and figured out the arcane two step process for removing many unwanted subpalette. A little clarification is needed. The "Synchronize With Directory" item does not need to be selected for "Delete Subpalette" to be missing. See attached screen shot. Two approaches may remove the subpalette. The first is to simply unselect "Reserve Spot for Synch Item" (assuming it’s selected). The second is to select "Synchronize With Directory". At this point, LV should ask for a directory to sync with but it does not (as if the item was being deselected). Then right-click again and the "Delete Subpalette" item will be available.
I have been unable to remove some subpalettes regardless of what procedure I try. For instance, the 'Control & Sim' and 'Vision/Motion' palettes can't be removed.
This sure feels like a bug... I'm using LV 2009 so it hasn't been fixed yet.

This is still an issue in LabVIEW 2013. However, Bob_Albern's workaround solution still works.

From the menu on any block diagram select View>>Functions Palette. This brings up the Fn Palette with a "Customize" link on the top.
Hit that customize! the third selection down is "Change Visible Palettes..." Select that and you get this dialog:
Just deselect "Express" (or any catagory that otherwise annoys you) and Bob's your uncle.
A similar approach is available from any FP Menu>>View Controls Palette to modify Control catagories displayed so you can dump those express controls and the super-ugly classic controls too!

That seems to only work in the root palette.
