rs232 to rs485 2 wire convertor

I am trying to communicate with a rs485 2 wire device using my RS232 com port on my PC.  I am using a Black box rs232 to rs485 converter and then have it hooked up to device.  I have tried every possible wiring scheme and termination resistors, but i cannot get my PC to talk to the device.  I have also been trying to use hyper terminal but that isnt working either.  I am lost of what to do next has anyone done somehting like this if so please tell me how i can make this work.

Check your hand-shake setting on the com port.

RS-485 can be used as a multi-drop network so you have to control who is talking when.

You should work with Black box and the widget vendor to get it working with hyper-terminal first.

Then try LV.
