run labview over remote desktop connection

Hello everyone!

I wish I had a laptop to connect directly to the test station but I don't. We have labview installed on my system. I can remote desktop to my computer while at the func test station. I am not sure how to set up talking to the insturments to connect to the test system and then the gpib interface through the LAN connection??? Any advice would be great!

You can't unless you have a GPIB <--> Ethernet device.

You may be able to use Remote VISA Server, but I've never tried this, so I have no idea what problems, if any, you would run into.

The GBIP/Ethernet devices are awesome!  Kudos for the post.

Just for clarification:

You have a test station that has hardware connected to it.

You have LabVIEW installed on your personal workstation computer.

You want to RDC into your workstation computer from the test station, and with LabVIEW use the test station hardware.

Is this correct?

What version of LabVIEW do you have?  Do you have the appropriate licensing to build your applications?  That is what I do.  I have 1 NI Developer Suite license.  This license (according to NI last I checked) allows me to install the IDE on my work computer and a process computer (2 computers basically, as long as I'm the only user of the developer suite.)  I have the 2nd install on my home computer so I can work from there when I need to.

Anyway, this license allows me to build my application (or compile) into executables that I can distibute to as many target computers as I want.  My standard development process is to build the LabVIEW program on my work laptop using simulated hardware and then compile for the targetted system.  Install the appropriate LabVIEW runtime and hardware drivers on the target computer as well as my application.  If I have time and feeling like being fancy, I can have this all done in 1 installer program.

It would be a lot simpler - and make more sense - if the LAB computer had LabVIEW installed on it and the LAPTOP didn't...

Nickerbocker,

I have LabView 8.6. It is the developer suite. That would be nice except I would have to install and unistall it everytime I need to build a new functional test at a different workstation. I think I am getting close with the remote server.

If you have the developer suite, you can just build your LabVIEW program into an executable and run that executable on as many computers as you want.

I wish I were that far!  I need to be able to talk to the instruments while I am creating the program.

Ahhh.  I understand.  Lol, that is where RDC comes in handy ;).  DAQmx offers some hardware simulation that can help development along.  Sometimes, what I do is make a program change, hit compile, and I have an RDC window open for my target machine where I just double-click the executable to see my changes.

Whatever works for you, go with that.
