unwanted top left empty space in front panel

OK. Many thanks to Rolf and all others who helped. Problem solved. I am now in the category of LabVIEW users who can claim "I don't see the problem" if anyone were to ask me about this again. Shrinking the window to the minimum appropriate size, and then disabling scroll bars in Window Appearance under Vi Properties solves it for me!

With hindsight (ie my attempt to justify why I didn't see the solution myself), the 'problem' hit me hard because I was building the application on a huge screen 1600x1200, so that, although I'd grouped the controls together, I never needed to scroll around to separate the active space from the inactive space on the oversized panel. And then, when running the built application on a lo
wer res screen, the scroll bars became absolutely vital to get to the active area, and the whole thing looked pretty amateurish (it was). Now all I do is shrink up the window around the controls area, disable scroll bars and set a min window size under VI Properties, and the resulting built application on the lower-res screen looks great!

Thanks again.

As the designer of the front panel, you decide how much of a front panel the end-user has access to via File>>VI Properties >> Window size.

Basically, this is not a bug or a problem; LabVIEW has been designed like this in order to make it easier and faster to modify front panels.
