Refnums have many applications, e.g. if you open a file, you'll get a refnum. Same for a TCP connection, VI reference, control reference, etc. etc. So, why do we need controls for them?
Yes, we typically don't in the toplevel program! However, if you need to feed a refnum created in the toplevel VI to a subVI, a refnum control provides a way to create a connector for it on the subVI front panel. 🙂
