Did you mean:

windows xp corrupted on few years

Hello all,

i've a dificult question to post. This is going to be simple. I can't explain it!

I've systems that has a program developed on labview, running on windows XP Home Edition (the latest situations where with vision). The hardware changes from system to system.

And installed OS with only 2 years start giving problems. Slow to respond to events. And I can't see where the problems is. These COmputers don't allow people to install other applications.

Can anyone give me some tips for solving this situation. Like:

 - Can I determine if my application it's corrupting the OS?

 - CAn I determine if the problem it's only caused by the OS?

 - It's the hardware?

I know that this is a difficult question to answer based only on this simple information. But if someone can share a little bit of he's experience, I appreciate!

Thanks,

Even though no one has access to install things, do they have access to the internet?  It could be some sort of malware/virus.

Hi!

Have you done a profile, even a simple one, with task manager, of memory usage / paging?

1. what version of labview,

labview 8.5.1

 2. do you hava .vi or just build app .exe?

we have several systems. Lots of different hardware

3. can you try on different computer?

Since this problem it's occuring on several machines with different hardware. This question it's answered.

 4. what hardware are you referring to  cpu memory or daq?

hardware could be CPU, memory (cause dependes on the supplier). But also Daq, vision aquision boards (pc2vision).

calling C or DLL?

It's an application that calls a labview driver for the commom vision blox vision functions. And this system it's acquiring from 4 cameras.

(I'm now restricting my problem to the more recent problem. Vision system that receives 8 images)

These computers are only for working. No internet connection and no person can install things.

NO. But I usually check these features. And the system it's quite low (but the cpu it's on 40% - cause of the image processing)

8.5.1 has not been out for two years so you at least upgraded LV. Make sure you mass-compile all of the VIs.

If you are saving and deleting a lot of files, check for fragmented disk.

Watch the task using the most CPU and figure out what its doing. Kill it to see what happens.

Disconnect your network cable to see if that makes a difference.

Has IT put any virus-checking stuff on this machine? Viris-cheekers have grown in their ability to waste CPU over the years.

There are no words to describe my experiences with XP...  I have a PC which is amazingly stable, whereas, two PCs dedicated to one task (cloned PC).  One works fine.  The other keeps crashing (which is why I have a clone of that PC to retrace why it crashes).  Both running XP SP2.  No Internet access, not connected to the network.  And no anti-virus.

The solution in my case will be to simply re-install XP from scratch and re-install everything as it was originally.

Why I describe this?  Simple..  I know that after I reinstall everything, the problem will dissappear and I'll never know what caused this in the first place.  Been there, done that before..

I simply share this story because, either your PC caught a virus / trojan, or it is a simple matter of Win-XP going nuts..  Just like a reboot is necessary to
"fix" run-time errors, re-installs appear to be the solution for such a bad OS. 😞

Or it's a hardware issue and might not be the OS's fault at all. I happen to find XP to be very stable and a good OS in general.

It's also recommended to perform routine maintanance (e.g. scan disk, defrag, etc.).

The PC's are 4 and 1 months old..  Running apps 24 hours a day.  After a clean install, the disk is defragmented.  The disk is also partitionned as C:\ for OS, E:\ for applications and F:\ for data.  Two 500 GB HD's.  Hardware is all high end peripherals and has up-to-date drivers.

I have another setup which is about 14 months old... All running XP Pro.  The PC starts off being something amazingly fast, and slows down over time.

The last two PC's have a selection of applications (none running LV or CVI or "home made apps", all COTS).   Nothing "external" should affect the startup / shutdown behavior of the PC's.  Nothing "external" should affect the running-over-time of the PC's....  Complete DiscScans using the manufacturer's disc-scanning software replorts a clean bill of health on the Hard Drives.  One would expect that if no changes are made to the setup of the PC, then how it boots / runs / shuts down on Day = 1 should be the same after Day = 365.  However, that is not the case.

It's been like that since win-95.  People would re-install the OS after 1 or 2 years of useage and the PC's performance would get "better".  Same thing with xp..  I'll re-install everything and both PC's will be impressive and free from crash...  until... something somewhere gets corrupted...  By what?  Why? How?

The last two PC's have identical HW... It will be interesting... 🙂

However, I do have PC's running win-2000 for the past 3 years without annoying degradation in performance or having mysterious crashes..  To me, Win-2K is the more solid OS.  xp is a disgrace...  vista is a sin..  😉
