wondering about some cables!

There are 2 parts are thicker than the whole cable on some NI's cables. I am wondering what they are and what they are for?

They are probably pieces of ferrite. It is used to decrease noise and signal degradation by changing the impediance of the cable. My guess is that the cables work much better with them than without them.
