xp versus win 7

Win 7 x64 can run 32 and 64 bit programs, you do not normally need to install win 7 x32 first.  The 64 bit version makes 2 program files folders, one named Program Files and one called Program Files (x86).  That is how it tracks 32 vs 64 bit programs.  32-bit applications run on top of an emulation of a 32 bit operating system that is called Windows on Windows 64, or WOW64 for short.

But you have to watch out with which version of LabVIEW you are running, 32 bit or 64 bit.

Guess I took to long.......

That is how my home PC is set up. I was unable to load the 64 bit at first. I had to load 32 bit and later install the 64 bit.  But you have answered my question very well. And I thank you for taking the time explaine this very clearly.

Sean,

Obviously this is too late to affect your testing, but I've run into similar issues with a USB to RS485 adapter driver.  By default, it had all OS settings under both XP and 7 set to very slow response times.  I changed all settings under "Advanced" port settings in Device Manager to minimums (USB transfer sizes, Latency Timer) and performance improved by an order of magnitude.  Those USB to Serial adapters may have had the same issue.  It's possible you had the XP drivers "tuned" (my devices allowed the driver installer to be tweaked) and not the Windows 7 installer.
