Device document browser can not open some pdf files

I have upgraded to Windoes XP and loaded Labview 7.1 and LabWindows/CVI along with the new DAQ 7.4. When I try to use the Device Document Browser, and click on the user's guide for PCI 6120 (or others), I get a dialog box that says that the PDF viewer can not open the file because it doesn't have the %PDF header. However, if I go to the directory where the document files are stored and click on the pdf document, the PDF viewer can open the file just fine.

Any suggestions about what I can do to fix this.

Could you tell me a little bit more about how you are getting to this Device Documentation Browser? I'd like to help you, I just need to make sure I'm starting from the same place as you.

The workaround is to simply browse to the document yourself, or find the latest version at www.ni.com/manuals. But I'd like to see if we can find out why you are seeing that linking error.

Hi Otis,
I installed the device document files from the NI-DAQ 7.4 download (I had upgraded from 7.3 to see if it was fixed in 7.4). After installing the software, I launch it via the Start/All Programs/National Instruments/NI-DAQ/Browse Device Documentation. It starts fine, and seems to show all non PDF pages just fine. As soon as I select a PDF file, then I get the error. Since I can go to the DocBrowser directory and load the PDF files directly it would seem that the script is not handing the file selection off to the PDF viewer (Adobe Reader 7.0) correctly.

Which brings up a question that you can answer, what is the relationship between the document number in the DocBrowser directory and the device number, i.e. what document number goes with the pci 6120?

Rick

Rick,

I have seen a similar problem when the files are not in the same folder as the application. I think the program works by looking in its own folder for the supporting pdf files.

That being said if you still have problems then it could be something like virus protection preventing adobe from being launched by another application.

If all else fails then I would just go to the Manuals Page and find the manual for the device you are looking for (NI 6115/6120 User Manual or NI 6115/6120 Specifications). It's not quite as convenient, but you should find what you are looking for.

Hi Otis,

Well it wasn't the document location nor was it the anti virus program...
I've gone ahead and removed the document browser and documents.

Thanks for your help,
Regards,
Rick
