How to express jitter ?

Hello all,
a bit offtopic to CVI, but since there are many DSP-knowledgeable people
here...
I have a regular timed event and measure the precise time of each event.
What is the best way to express the jittering ?
As the variance of the time difference between two events ?

I want to see how regular my timer is.

Bonus question: what is the influence of jittering on IIR filters ? C;-)

On the rare occasions I have had to work with jitter, it has usually been expressed as an RMS value. There is some more information on the topic here.
