LabWindows CVI 2017 and License Manager won't start - evaluation license

I installed LabWindows CVI 2017 and have been using it under the evaluation license.  I went through all the demos successfully, and am now in the process of writing a program to control my 'scope.  I was away from it for about a week, and now CVI 2017 and the License Manager won't start at all.  The icon flashes up and disappears without any error or message.  I'm guessing my license expired.  Is there any way to extend it?

bmackin,

It seems odd that the NI License Manager is not opening. That should always open regardless of license status. Could you give a bit more detail on the behavior of the NILM when you try to open it?

If you are able to open the NILM, you can verify your CVI license status.

If the evaluation license is expired you will need to purchase a new license from NI. I would be happy to help you with that process if you decide that is what you want to do.

When I try to run the License Manager, the splash screen comes up (NI License Manager 4.0) for about 1.5 seconds, then it closes.  Every time.  NI processes that are currently running:

niDiscSvc.exe

nidmsrv.exe

nierserver.exe

niLxiDiscovery.exe

nimdnsResponder.exe

nimsxs.exe

nipxism.exe

nisvcloc.exe

and 3 instances of NIWebServiceContainer.exe

This is a known issue with NI License Manager 4.0. Try deleting this file and re-launching:

C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\National Instruments\UserAccount\Configuration.xml

No change.  Found the file, deleted that file, tried again, same thing; splash screen pops up for 1-2 seconds, then closes again.

You could also try downloading a new evaluation license and replacing the one in C:\ProgramData\National Instruments\License Manager\Licenses.

If that doesn't work, please get in touch with NI support.

The download link is to a file with the extension ".lc".  Basically a text file.  The instructions say:

  • Click the Download Link link above.
  • Your browser will begin downloading the standalone installer for your software.
  • Once the standalone installer has been downloaded, launch the executable and follow the onscreen prompts to complete the installation of your software.

The third step says, "launch the executable".  There is no executable in that download.  It's some kind of configuration file.  What executable is supposed to be launched?  Is this .lc file supposed to go somewhere for said executable to read it?

Right click the link and choose "save link as..." It's just text file, so some browsers will go ahead and open it.

Saved it.  Ignored the instructions below the link, and copied into the directory specified at the bottom of the page, with the specified filename.  Tried starting License Manager - same problem.   Tried starting LabWindows CVI - same problem.  I feel like the only solution may be to completely uninstall the software and reinstall it.

Be aware that License Manager is a dependency of most NI software, so you'll need to remove any licensed NI software if you want to reinstall NILM.

An easy way to uninstall all NI software (including NILM) is to use the '/qb /x all' command line argument to the uninstaller described here.
