NI-Visa and Lab Windows CVI

I work at the NASA Johnson Space center. We do laptop hardware/software integration. We used to have a Windows 98 based platform with Lab Windows\CVI v5.0.1 installed with NI-Visa 1.2. We recently upgraded to a new platform with Windows 2000 as the OS. We had previously purchased license for the Lab Windows/CVI v5.0.1 and have not recived licenses for a newer version yet so we decided to integrate the Lab Windows/CVI v5.0.1 with the Windows 2000 SP4.

This suite of development tools was originally requested by International Space Station Astranouts to use to enhance their programming skills based on available time but has never really been used by anyone.

The problem we have is that we see this error in the windows event log "The nipxi service failed to start due to the following error:
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. "

Looking at your dicussion forums you suggest that the NI visa needs to be upgraded.

I have three questions:
1. what exactly does not work if we don't upgrade the NI-Visa to 3.x
2. What are the impacts to Lab Windows/CVI 5.0.1 if we jsut upgrade Ni-Visa
3. If there is a broke is there a possible workaround

just keep in mind that we are the integrators and not developers. Thanks.

So, in theory, all of our drivers are designed to be fully backwards compatable, so something developed in NI-VISA 1.2 should work in NI-VISA 3.x. However, each revision of NI-VISA implements some improvement over a previous version, such as bug fixes. If you have designed a program to work around some previous problem, your work arounds may no longer be necessary or valid. For more details on what fixes have been made in each revision of VISA since 1.2, I recommend checking out the readme files for each revision. You can find a list of all NI-VISA releases HERE.

When NI-VISA 3.2 installs it updates LabWindows/CVI files for versions 5.x, 6.x, and 7.x, so it should work just fine.

Finally, if something breaks after installing NI-VISA 3.2, we'll work through it then.
