Very much so, hardware support is critical for higher speeds. This is particularly true of high speed turn around requirements; that is when the transmitter must get off the bus within xxmS after the last character or a situation where you must start to transmit within xx mS of detecting the bus going tri-state. If the turnaround requirements are tight then hardware support is the practical only option.
