Hello Ricoucf

CVI 6.0 does'nt support windows XP as mentionned here. In the very first time, try to compile your code with CVI 7.0 under XP OS. This should make it work...

Hello Mathieu,

Thank you for response, The confusion arise when in front of the CD says that windows XP is supported though the documentation says otherwise.  Also, I have one computer with windows XP and it was able to run CVI.  For some reason these two computers CVI does not work.  When I double click the exe to run it nothing happens.  These computers are laptops which I have seen in the forums that there are issues with them in term of display of CVI as an application, But the program does not run at all. So ifthere is any further comments that you can give it would be helpful.

Thanks,

Omar

Howdy ricoucf,

LabWindows/CVI 6 was released prior to Windows XP and thus official testing has not been done and therefore we do not offiicially support it.
That being said, I've have used LabWindows/CVI 6 on an XP machine quite a bit and never seen any problems.  One suggestion I would make though would be to download the latest LabWindows/CVI Run-time Engine (which is fully backwards compatible), install it on those machines and see if it makes a difference.

Hope this helps!

First of all the CVI runtime upgrade did not fix the issue.  Which I then proceded to call support, which they said that they cannot support me over the phone for 6.0 and to upgrade to 8.0.  What I don't understand is how can you say it is not supported when it clearly states on the CD "LabWindows/CVI Base Development System for Windows 2000/NT/XP/ME/9x". How can you state this on a product and do not support it?

Howdy ricouf,

The first area that I wanted to clarify is the number of versions back we support. If you take a look at the Supported Software document, you will notice that we actually only provide technical support for LabWindows/CVI 7.0 and above. If you refer to the Release Notes located in C:\Program Files\National Instruments\MeasurementStudio\Help\, you will notice in the "Minimum System Requirements" section, the supported OS's are Windows 2000/Me/9x/(Windows NT, Service Pack 3 or later).  You can also access this by selecting Start >> Programs >> National Instruments >> Measurement Studio >> Help >> Measurement Studio Library and select the link for the Release Notes.  We believe there might have been a mistake in the CD printing and apologize for the confusion.

As far as the problem you are having, we have not seen this behavior before.  It appears to be something that is machine specific.  Can you run this executable on other machines with Windows XP installed? Can you actually run your application inside the LabWindows/CVI 6 environment on a Windows XP machine? Could you possibly post an example of your CVI project so we could test it out here?

Thanks!

Best Regards,

Hi Omar,

It sounds like you are unable to launch CVI itself, not a CVI-built application.  If this is the case, then I would just check on a few things:
1. After you have double-clicked the cvi.exe icon, check the Processes list in the Windows Task Manager (ctrl+shift+ESC) and confirm that cvi.exe is not listed there.
2. Try launching the executable from a command prompt rather than from Windows Explorer.
3. Have you tried double-clicking the .exe directly, or have you just been trying shortcuts to the .exe (i.e. from the Start>>Programs menu)?  If the latter, then try browsing directly to the .exe and double-clicking that.
4. Is CVI the only application that fails to launch?  Are there other programs on those machines that have the same problem?
5. Did you upgrade a previous installation of CVI on those machines, or was 6.0 the only version of CVI installed on them?

It's hard to guess what the issue might be, but you might want to run an anti-spyware/malware program (Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D are both good), especially if this problem affects other applications besides CVI.

I definitely understand your frustration about the supported OS confusion.  It certainly sounds like someone messed up the printing of the CD label.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

One possible reason for CVI 6.0 not to start up on a modern machine is the data execution prevention (Intel XD or AMD NX). That version of CVI seems to contain self modifying code or some other nasty trick that violates this virus protection mechanism. This has little to do with WIndows XP versus Windows 2000 or Windows NT, except in Windows XP you can define an exception in order to run CVI on the machine. It is in System Control - System Properties - Extended - Data Execution Prevention. If you put CVI 6.0 into the list of exceptions, it will start up and run properly.

Thanks dietert,

It works great.  I almost gave up and upgraded to the new version. National Instruments should post this issue if it is not posted on their technical documentation.

Thanks,

Omar
