Time axis and strip charts

Hello all,
something is not clear to me: if I use a time axis on a strip chart, the
values displayed on the axis start in 1900. It's no surprise since the
PlotStripChart does not receive a time_t, so how do I give it an absolute
time ?
Alternatively, if using relative time, it's relative to what ?

whic answers the question but also implies that I need a different method if
the data comes at non-deterministic intervals.
