maximum com port

What is the maximum com port allowed by Windows 98? Win2000? I searched MSDN but couldn't locate this info.

Hi,
I don't know the maximum, but if it can help you, know that I'm currently downloading simultaneously data over 20 ports with NI-SERIAL PCI cards.
How many do you need?

It's more of a software design question. I probably don't need all that many, but I don't want to limit the user's options if they want a com port at 34, for instance. I thought that the maximum was something like 99 for Win98, and higher for Win2000.

I "played" for you with our test bench under winNT and the comport number goes up to 256 by soft...(control settings panel with NI-SERIAL driver 1.45).
Under W98, I would not venture further than that even if with MAX I was able to change the port number to any number I tried...
