the device didn't respond to a *IDN? query

help help help!

Hello everyone, I'm a beginner of labwindows, and I connected my laptop with a Motion Controller through a GPIB, but the Measurement & Automation Explorer said " the device didn't respond to a *IDN? query, the PAD is 2, SAD is 0, so could you help me figure out what's wrong with my operation? Thank you so much.

It simply means that particular instrument did not respond to the "IDN?" command.  Some instruments do not support that command, but it does no harm.  If you can communicate with the instrument I would not worry about it.

Hello, mvr! thank you for your information, but I saw my boss he can get the answer asking "*IDN?", but he is in Brazil, so he couldn't help me. I'm using GPIP-USB-HS 488.2 2.73version for XP.  The instrument is a motion conctroller, doesn't look so old.

Check the controlers manual for the commands it understands. As we don't know the controlers make and type, we can't do that for you. And you might also check if it needs some termination character for its commands.

That secondary address of 0 made me a little suspicious.

Noone else pointed out, so it may be OK but it seemed like a special address to me.

Can you change the address settings and try again?

Are there other devices to your bus? Do they respond to IDN?

Maybe you can attach an instrument known to be working and try with it.
