why does the labwindows/cvi installer run everytime I try to start labview 7.1 after I installed N!-Serial?

Solved!

why does the labwindows/cvi installer run everytime I try to start labview 7.1 after I installed N!-Serial?  The installer runs 3 times in a row and asks me to reboot each time.  Then I reboot and it happens all over again when I try to start labview 7.1 unless I select cancel 3 times in a row then labview will start.

I remember I did have this problem briefly when that version came out... But
I can't remember what it was all about. Unless someone else pipes in, I'd
suggest uninstalling CVI, try if LW now runs by itself and then reinstall...

Hi barry-aic,

What version of the CVI Run-Time Engine is displayed in those dialog pop-ups? The next time the installer dialog pops up, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click on My Computer and select Manage.
  2. Go to the Event Viewer and look at the Application event logs.
  3. In there, you should find some MSI Error logs that tell us what GUID and file it can't find and is trying to repair.  Please post this information for me.

A few other helpful pieces of information would be:

  1. You mentioned you have installed LabVIEW 7.1 on your system with NI-Serial. What version of NI-Serial did you just install?
  2. What version of the cvirte.dll do you have in your [System32] directory?

Thanks

When I try to start Labview the versiom Labwindows/CVI 8.1 inst trying to update.  I have only installed Labview 7.1.  Labwindows/CVI came into play only after installing the NI-Serial3.2

These are the events that occur when I try to run Labview 7.1 after I installed NI-Serial 3.2.

The version of  cvirte.dll I have in System32 is 8.1.1.361.

Okay, I know what's going on as this was related to a bug with the CVI 8.1.0 RTE.  You should be able to fix this issue by download a version of the RTE later than 8.1.0. Since the RTE is fully backwards compatible, it would be fine to install the latest released version of the RTE.  The RTE downloads are found here.

I am not planning to use Labwindow/CVI for my project nor have I installed it except for whatever happened when I installed NI-Serial 3.2.  I just downloaded the Labwindows/CVI Run-Time Engine 8.5.1  I will reply to the post again after I try to install this file.

Thank You,

Barry-AIC

The NI-Serial 3.2 does in fact install version 8.1.0 of the CVI RTE so that's how you got it on your system. Let me know if installing that new part fixes your issue.

Yes!  The version 8.5.1 worked and I no longer have the startup problem with LV 7.1. Thank you for your help.

I did run into another snag though.  I had a situation with my USB RS-232/4 serial interface.  When I plug it into a USB port the "Found new hardware" wizard finds the usb drivers but then it can not find the drivers for the ports.  I had to direct it to search in the "c:\program files\national intruments\NI-serial\drivers\usb\NiUsbSer" folder.  The hardware installed and passed the NI-Serial trouble shooting wizard.  Everything was fine until I shut down windows.  When I restarted my computer the hardware wizard detected my ports as "unknown device"s.  I had to manually remove the devices in device manager then redetect them and again I had to direct the wizard to the drivers.  I have it working right now and am about to shut down again.   I will have to post the results later.
