Lookout 6.5 losing history and then becomes unresponsive

Good morning

I'm having a problem with one of my Lookout 6.5/Windows 7 32 machines.  After a period of time, ranging from a few days to a couple of weeks, Lookout goes grey and reports "Not responding".  You can not end the process in Task Manager so a reboot is the only way to get Lookout functioning again.

Once rebooted, when you look at an example of a Hypertrend you can see that there a sections of logged sensor data missing.  However, it does not stop logging all data, some may log and others may not (See Lookout 6.5.jpg).

When logging finally stops completely it appears to coincide with MSSQL$Citadel events which you can see in the Event Viewer.  In particular an event that occurs everyday at 01:00 (which it does on the other Lookout 6.5 machine too (but with no crash) (See Lookout 6.5.jpg).

Thanking you in advance for you help

Mark

When Lookout/Citadel crash it can cause data loss (sometimes even previously recorded data).

I would suggest use the Performance Monitor (Control Panel > Adminstrative Tools) and creating a performance counter with system performance template.

I have found similar errors with some backup and antivirus scheduled activities.

Good morning, and many thanks for your reply.

I'm not at all familiar with Performance Monitor, but I created a log yesterday morning (though there may be a lot more to it than that).  The machine crashed last night and a PM screenshot is attached.  Looking at the Event Viewer the other thing that regularly runs at 1.00 am (the time things always appear to go wrong) is Defrag.  I have now turned this off to see how that affects things (though it never appears to have been a problem up until recently).  Do you think that's the cause?

Best wishes

Mark

System still losing/locking with defrag disabled, so it wasn't that......

Not wanting to tempt fate, but I believe I've found the cause of the problem.  We use a number of Advantech EKI-1522 and 1524s which are ethernet to serial gateways.  I recently updated the configuration software on the subsequently affected machine which evidently introduced a new virtual serial port driver.  When I more recently updated the software on my other Lookout machine the same problem started to occur too, hence the discovery.  Touch wood, things are stable once again after I downgraded both machine's software versions.

Hopefully problem over.

I have used Lantronix UDS and Intellibox serial servers and have had a lockup, usually if the network drops.

Lookout will hang while the port is reestablished, usually 10-20 seconds.

Using HyperTerminal on the same server does not cause a lockup so it has something to do with how lookout handles the serial devices.

Good hunting!
