Lookout Classified Ads???

My computer was recently upgraded from win95 to windows 2000 - when this was finished, Lookout (5.0) refused to start stating sommething like "Cannot find lookout classified ads - does not exist as a service" - those are the exact words, but very close - now lookout 5.0 is asking me to log in when I try to start it (the classified ads business went away for no reason apparent to me) - i don't think i ever created a security file - also - is there no way to uninstall/remove lookout from the system and start over? Thanks a million.

Hi,

Windows 9x/Me does not have the functionality of running services as Windows 2000/XP. Therefore your Lookout 5.0 installation registered the NI Services (lkads.exe, lkcitdl.exe and lktsrv.exe) as processes and not services on Windows 95.

I assume you did not a "clean" installation of Windows 2000 and you did an "upgrade" of the OS. This might have some issues with the installed process/service and as well with Add/Remove Programs. It is maybe easy to fix this by reinstalling Lookout 5.0. If you cannot see in the Add/Remove Programs Lookout to be uninstalled this might be a problem with the "upgrade" process of the OS. I just don't know what else you could do beside trying to remove it manually.

On the other hand, I would consider to reinstall the Windows 2000 from scratch with a new formated HD... since this would prevent to have a _Microsoft DLL mess_ of Win95 and Win2000. But don't forget to backup all your user data before you format the HD!
A good way to start is maybe:
How to Upgrade from Windows 95 or Windows 98
Additional Windows 95 and Windows 98 Compatibility Issues
The paragraph as mentioned is maybe the problem of the NI Services:
"Network components that do not ship on the Windows 2000 CD-ROM, such as protocols, clients, and services. Contact your networking vendor for updated protocol stacks, client software, and services."

Instead of trying to reinstall Lookout 5.0 you might just try to install the NI Services from the CD \Logos folder, the logos.msi or the latest version available from ftp://ftp.ni.com/support/lookout/logos.

The Lookout security file is in the system directory, called lookout.sec. If your Lookout 5.0 installation on Win95 was using the c:\Windows\system folder, the file should be there. However, when you "upgrade" now to Windows2000 and you let create a system folder of c:\WinNT\system32. Obviously, the Lookout installation does not have the lookout.sec file copied to this new system folder. But once you started Lookout it will - I guess - create a default lookout.sec file in the new system folder. But that's all just guessing, since I don't know if you "upgraded" or "new installed" the OS.

Hope any of this helps.

Roland
PS: Some commend line arguments for the installed NI services might help as well to (re-)install the services (e.g. c:\Winnt\system32\lkads.exe -install -auto). See more:
