Significance Of * sign in Connection editor

Hi

What does the * sign near the input or output no. in connection editor signify.

Normally it shows the datatype, int or float or logical, but sometimes it shows the * sign and sometimes it doesn't show any sign.

Isn't this a wild card. I think that indicates that it will accept any datatype input. Or on the output side that it does not know the datatype; the General Algebraic Expression block comes to mind.
