1764 on remote subnet

I have a 1764 smart canera on a remote subnet which I am trying to access through a CISCO firewall using NAT. I can ping the camera  ok and have opened up all ports specified in the user manual but Vision Builder AI says it is unable to initiate a connection. It works ok on the local subnet but not o a remote subnet. If I tell MAX the IP address it can detect the camera but it says it is disconnected.

Doe anyone have any ideas how to get the connection  to work on a remote subnet?

Hi Peter,

"To configure the NI Smart Camera, it must reside on the same subnet as the development computer. If you want to use the smart camera on a subnet other than the one the development computer is on, first connect and configure the smart camera on the same subnet as the host computer.

The first time you configure the smart camera, you must also install software on it. After configuring the smart camera, use DHCP to assign an IP address or reassign a static IP address for the subnet where you want the smart camera to reside, then physically move the smart camera to the other subnet."

Have you done this last step? I would suggest checking with your network administrator if you need assistance using DHCP.

Peter,

The remote subnet should be fine but the NAT could be problematic. Which side is behind NAT? Is it the smart camera sit behind NAT or is it the development PC?

Thanks for the replies so far. To answer the question about NAT the SMART camera is behind NAT on the private network and the development computer is on the wider network.

Hi Peter,

Running the camera behind NAT is not recommended because there are a huge number of ports you'll likely need to map from your NAT device to the smart camera's IP address for all the various software components to work properly.

A few I can think of:

-TCP 21 (FTP)

-TCP 3364 (VBAI)

-TCP 44516 (Device Discovery and configuration)

-TCP 7750 (IMAQ configuration)

This list may not be complete, especially if there is other software that you might want to run (LabVIEW, etc).

Eric,

Thanks for the reply.

I was coming to the same conclusion that there must be further ports that need translation. Do you know if NI provides a definitive list of ports used by their software?

Meanwhile I will try the ports you mention two of which I have not tried yet.

I only really want to use VBAI and I have opened the four ports mentioned in NI user manual already.

Thanks for your help

Peter
