Wow, thanks for all the tips. Here's a quick update:
I got "Format 7" video mode to work. But it looks like the best I can do (without using an external trigger) in is to use the "ExtendedShutter" register on the camera to manually set the shutter time to within microsecond accuracy. The camera does not allow any better timing than that.
But with an error of about approx 1 microsecond per frame, that produces some drift over time. An error of 1 microsec per frame, at 60 fps, will produce a drift of over 5 seconds per day. Which I guess I could adjust for by adding a duplicate frame every 16667 frames (4 mins).
Hmmm. so now my options are:
1. Use an external trigger
2. Use Format 7 mode AND compensate for the error by adding a frame every x seconds
I am a little reluctant to go for the external trigger, but mainly for application-related reasons: This system may get deployed at multiple sites. And some sites may not have a DAQ card, e.g. I envision some people using this system without a DAQ card. But I need to think about that. I agree, that I would probably get more accurate timing using an external trigger.

...except your drift will be camera and temperature-dependent.... I wish you the best of luck trying to account for that! 🙂
