MAX 4.5 is extremely slow

Hello Bruce,

I am not sure why this is happening on your PC, as it is working fine on mine. I would recommend a re-install of MAX on your PC. If the problem still persists, we will have to look further into it. A corrupt installation may have caused this to happen.

I've avoided doing this since I will have to also uninstall (and reinstall) a lot of other applications that are dependent on MAX before I can do this.  I've read some posts about removing the contents of the MAX\Data folder and restoring, but this folder was empty.  I just realized that the contents this folder have also moved to the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\National Instruments\MAX\Data folder.  I will try doing this first and let you know if this helps.  I also had IMAQ 4.1/MAX 4.5 installed on another computer (upgrading from IMAQ 3.8) and it worked fine so it seems like there is some sort of file corrupted on my PC that is different from others.  How this happened I do not know.

Perhaps try repair instead of uninstall/reinstall.  You can do that without uninstalling everything that depends on MAX.  Repair will reinstall over the existing files without uninstalling them.

Deleting the MAX\Data folder and then repairing worked!  (sorry, I said restore in my previous post)

MAX seems to be loading normally now.  Thanks for your help in resolving this issue.

So you reinstalled max?If not what do you mean by repair?

When you go to add/delete software, Repair is one of the options.  Instead of uninstalling and reinstalling your software, you can just repair it.  Repair does a fresh install on top of the old files without deleting them.

Yes, I used the repair option in Add or Remove Programs control panel.  The trick was deleting the Data folder (I don't think these files get restored, maybe because they would have a more recent modified date?) before restoring.  I previously tried just restoring and that didn't work.

Sorry to bring this old thread up but MAX. No matter the installation or how good the machine is MAX is always painfully slow or sluggish at best. It's as if the who app is single threaded. When working with a remote target an operation causes the whole GUI to grey out (freeze) until it is done. Seems like poor design to me.

I also run in to frequently crashes.

Oldest version we have is 5.0.0f1.

I would suggest trying MAX 5.5, by installing NI System Configuration 5.5.

We moved several of the Silverlight right-hand views for remote sytems that have existed since 4.7 to WPF in 5.5 and that has improve the performance of several operations and reduced the memory consumption.

Please try it out and let us know if it helps.

Also I would suggest uninstalling any NI drivers that you don't actually need.  Every NI driver installs a MAX plug-in and some of them are slower than others.  The more drivers you have installed, the slower MAX will be.

However, we are working on making some additional changes that will improve the performance and responsiveness even more in a future relase.
