Hello,
Depending on whether your computer has a 1394a or 1394b controller, there could be an advantage to using your computer. With most firewire ports, they have a single host controller and all ports share bandwidth though that host controller. 1394a is limited to 400Mb/s while 1394b is 800Mb/sec. The 8252 is a 1394a card so if your computer is 1394b, the 8252 will actually have less available bandwidth. On the other hand, if you are already using multiple firewire devices, adding a 8252 could add another host controller which means you would have that additional bandwidth available.
