Open Inspection Warning: Read/Verify Text could not be initialized...

Hello,

I'm using some OCR-Steps within an inspeciton. However, one of the OCR-Steps always generates the "Open Inspection Warning" that says, that the OCR Step could not be initialized ("Read/Verify Text could not be initialized"). I checked the path of the char set file and it is correct. The same char set works perfectly with all the other OCR-steps within my inspection.

Deleting the whole OCR-step an generating a new one for that text returns the same error....

How can I solve that problem?

Hi,

So you are working with VBAI, what Version is it?

Is it on Windows or are you using a CVS, or SmartCam, or EVS?

You have serveral OCR steps using the same .abc file where one of them throws this error, right?

You allready tried to delete it and create a new OCR step with the same .abc, but it didn't work. What else did you test?

Have you been able to succesfully create new OCR steps with an other or a new .abc file?

Something that I have seen cause this is invalid settings in the OCR file. One way to figure out which parameter is out of range is to edit the file and make sure all the numerics are in range (i.e. increment/decrement the numeric for all the settings and make sure you can get them back to their original value). If you can't it means the original value was not valid and this is most likely why the initialization was failing. If this still doesn't help, you can generate LV code, and step through the Setup of the OCR step to see where the error is coming from. You could also post your *.abc file on the forum if you want someone else to see what's not valid with it.

Check if "Elements Spacing" and "Character Spacing" are not set to "0" both. This was the case for me.

Hello Martin,

it seems to me that you was right about the causes of problem that Thomas had. In particular VBAI 2010 always returns an error when I try to start an OCR inspection on a smart camera.

For some reason you are not able to set the Element Spacing and the Character Spacing at VBAI to zero but in OCR Training Interface you still can set them to 0. When you select the path to the *.abc file VBAI reads a set of parameters and shows them in Size tab in step setup window. So it might be difficult to understand the reasons of error.

To avoid this problem the only thing you have to do is to set both of those parameters to non-zero values.
