Smartcams as a standalone

Hi,
I consider using NI smartcams for a standalone application with LabVIEW.

It's inline,  some 15pcs/second (triggered), I get some information via RS232 and I need a lightning controller and a TTL out. The processing is rather simple (it takes 20 ms on my laptop, and is monochrome/VGA), so this sounds like a perfect combination to try out a smartcam.

The thing is: I get information via RS232 about which template to access (not constantly, this data changes once in a few hours, so speed is ok), so I pick one template -  there are about 20 template files. I do not need vision information in there - but I'd like to give the user a possibility to update those files, for example, if the product changes.
This would require a change into the "Update" mode (triggered via some RS232 command), the user would have to insert an article into the right position, acquire an image, check if it's ok, and possibly number it. I'm not quite sure how to do this or if it's possible. I would need the user to manually connect to the device (remote access?), get some GUI, possibly access memory...

Is this possible? (I do want a standalone application for 99% of the time. There is no way to install a pc or even a touchpanel there..)

Thanks for your ideas,

bp

Is a notebook for maintenance issues (= your update mode) acceptable? Connect the notebook via LAN to the SmartCam and have the camera's software provide a remote panel which allows for controlling the actions in update mode.

Actually, I intended to do more than maintainance, but requirements changed (in a good way) and I'll be fine.
Thanks for your help,
