What kind of defects are you looking for?  That makes a big difference.  This might be a good application for dark lighting.  You could put a light on either sided of the bottle.  Good bottles won't show anything, but any defects will reflect light back to the camera and be clearly visible.  This can be a great way to find surface scratches on glass.  You could probably see bubbles and internal defects as well.

If these are glass bottles, UV illumination may be interesting, see http://www.uvcorder.com/pdf/ADI0608UV.pdf and http://www.pentax.fr/downloads/cctv/de/pentax_uvlenses.ppt.  The image on page 11 is interesting.

Thanks Bruce,

i have to find the defection in bottle neck  ( the top of the bottle) so i think if the light is focussing from top means it will be good.... if we focus from top means.... we can get the perfect  circle of the mouth(if it is good bottle)..... for that what type of lighting we can go..... and i have to find both transparent and some colored botlles like brown and green.......

Dear Kalanga,

For illuminating the top rim of a transparent bottle, I would suggest using a darkfield illuminator, see the attached darkfield.jpg image and http://www.nerlite.com/Dark-Field.html for information regarding darkfield illumination.  The sample image is of a clear bottle.
