Triggering Hardware

Hi,

I am currently using a Basler Vision Firewire Camera a601f. I am trying to do some trigger image acquisition with it ie I will need to do some pattern changes and then acquire this images from the firewire camera. I am previously using IMAQ Snap mode to do acquisition serially but it is a bit too slow. I am trying Grab mode and Sequence mode instead currently but I am plagued by synchronisation problem. So I am thinking of using some trigger method to do this instead in hope of achieving better frame rate and synchronisation.

I am thinking of passing a signal from the external device after the completion of the pattern changes and then trigger the acquisition. I have read the IMAQ manual and have noticed that triggering is divided into software and hardware trigger. My interpretation is that in software trigger, the triggering signal is generated from the CPU/software program itself and pass to the camera.  While in hardware trigger, the triggering signal is generated from the external hardware and passed to the camera. Is that correct? In software trigger, I would not need any extra interface board. Is this correct?

While for hardware triggering, there is a need for an interface/trigger board to handle the trigger input and output(to camera) right? Would like your recommendation(any from NI)?  Which method(hardware or software)would be more precise?

Thanks for your help in advance

Hi Water,

Hardware trigger is definitely most appropriate for acurate triggering.

To perform such trigger you just need to connect the trigger signal to the trigger input of your camera.

Cheers
