camera selection

Hi,
My application involves inspection of metal sheets hanging on a conveyor and also determine their sequence.(Metal sheets are of various size. ) Few of them are equal in size and and mirror images of each other in shape. The area under inspection is 2.5 M X 1.5 M. the resoluton required is 0.5 MM Can anybody suggest camera for this application. Probably I have to use mulitple cameras, If so is it possible in labview to merge images in order to determine the complete object shape.

regards,
yashpal.

Hi Yashpal,

i can´t recommend a camera to you, but i´m sure you can merge the images from multiple cameras.

Hope it helps.

I had designed a system for similar system and i remember using a line scan camera. My application was the sheet metal will be continously moving and i need to inspect the surface defects and in addition need to communicate with the plc to cut the defective part. One of the toughest i have done so far.

Based on your info we can tell u a appropriate lenss. For the optimum camera tell the parts to be inspected time given. As i said in my previous post  i used a line scan camera if the metal sheet is gonna continously move.

hi muks,

The conveyor speed is 7M/minute. I have to check whether they are loaded in proper sequence on the conveyor.  Each sheet has got it's own identity in terms of shape or some rectangular hole or some bending  on it etc.

7M/Minute is not that very fast.I will suggest you go for a progressive scan camera.Use a the best shutter speed and a high illumination and a telecentric lens

And have u planned for your rejection system.Which is quiet a head ache in such an application?

R u measuring something or detecting any surface defects?

I will tell you what exactly i want to do. I have a rack manufacturing production line. Suppose 8 componenets are required to assemble a single rack. for powder coating 2 sets of rack are loaded onto the conveyor(in a predefined sequence) and after coating is being unloaded at two stations (again in some predefined sequence such that one station have the complete set )and packed. The loading operation is done manually. if wrong sequence is loaded, wrong set of componenets may get packed. e.g. if we have doors, the left and right door will identical in size n shape, except the hinge position n lock everything will appear same.

MY job is to check whether componenets have been loaded in proper sequence or not. if not then raise an alarm n stop conveyor. THe max size of shhet  is as mentinoed above and the distingushing feature like a rectanguakr hole of size 50mm x  5mm.

Sounds pretty straight forward.Study the variation in the pattern .Avoid using pattern matching. If the variation is too much use a  dynamic threshold after studying the sample. I will usggest using a progressive scan camera. Is your stuck post some images
