extract a portion of an image to manipulate

I have been trying to extract a portion of an image so that I can work on just a part of it. 

First, I import an image and use the ROI tools to get the global rectangle.  I then try to use the global rectangle to extract the portion of the image I want to work on.  That seems to work, except that when I move the courser back over the original image, the original image "becomes" the extracted image...I have tried copying the original image before working on it, but the same thing seems to happen...any thoughts.

That is because you have connected your "img destination" of imaq extract.vi  to a new imaq create.Create one,give it a distinct name.It will work.
