image processing

I am conducting research at Norfolk State University on images of the eye. I am trying to extract just the iris of the eye from any given image of the eye. I am trying to use the edge detection VI but have not had very much success with it stoping on the edges of the eye. Is there another built in fuction that can detect the edges and then save that portion as an image file for data manimpulation.

You may have to do some processing on the image to make the egdes more defined. You can then use a mask to get just the iris from your original picture. Could you post the image you are trying to work with?

The most likely useful tool will be Find Circular Edge in the machine vision palette. You would then have to remove the section with the eyelid, etc. Distortion of the circular iris could make it a little more difficult.

Like Brian said, it would be useful to have some example images that show what you are trying to do and some images that you have problems with.

With my project I have used color matching to determine the pupil of the eye. This gives me an approx. center. my next step is to create a line vi that will take the given point and subtract a known value. I am trying to create a histogram on that line to compare to other images.

Thanks for the advice. I did do some processing on the image.
