After Upgrade (8.6.1), computer wants PCI Simple Communication Controller

After an 8.5.1 > 8.6.1 upgrade, the computer wants to install a "PCI Simple Communication Controller", but can't find anything to install. The PCI card (6221) and all ancillary stuff seem to works fine.

This issue has shown up a few times on the forum, but the posts are old. Has there been an official bit of advice published about this?

thanks

Richard

Hi Broken Arrow,

The PCI Simple Communications Controller is a generic name given by Windows to PCI boards installed in a PC when the drivers for the device are not installed.  Try following the steps below to determine what this device might be:

  1.  From Device Manager, find the PCI Simple Communications Controller entry.  Right-click on it and select Properties
  2. Go to the Details tab.  You should have an entry that looks something like the following: PCI\VEN_1093&DEV_70B8&SUBSYS_00000000&REV_00\4&5855BE9&0&10F0
  3. VEN means vendor, and DEV means device.  In my case, I have a VEN of 1093 and a DEV of 70B8
  4. Once you have these two numbers, you can look up the device on www.pcidatabase.com

In my case, I receive the following result since my device is a Multifunction DAQ from National Instruments:

PCI Database

I suspect your device may be something else, such as an Ethernet Controller or a PCI modem.  If the product is indeed National Instruments hardware and you need any help finding the right drivers don't hesitate to post back.  If it is another device and you need help finding the right driver I would contact the vendor for assistance.

Thanks for replying John.

Yep, I went there but couldn't figure out what the card was from that site. it's a 1093 (you guys) and 704E (database can't find it).

However, I have found that the card in question is likely a NI-PCI-FB. This fieldbus card is in slot 4 and isn't used (for the current project) but I want it to stay in the computer for the next project.

I gues installing NI-FieldBus would fix it, but I can't locate the software. Is there one driver that'll satisify the computer about the existance of that card, without necessarly installing full-blown FiledBus?

Thanks!

Richard

Hi Broken Arrow,

Unfortunately I don't have much personal experience with FieldBus--I would suggest emailing fieldbus.support@ni.com for assistance.  You can also post to the FieldBus section of our forums.  Installing NI-FBUS should fix the problem, but I am not sure where you can obtain the driver without the CDs.
