windows services

Setup: Windows XP, SP3 Visual Studio 2010 for development

Application Target: Windows XP3 and Windows 7

Does anyone have any idea about the number of windows services that Measurement Studio will be requiring on the development computer and the clients run time computer?

Are there any Windows Services that Measurement Studio 2010 installs?

I ask because I have a not so good experiance with Test Stand. After evaluating that program and uninstalling it it still left about 100 megs of Windows Services running on the development PC.

I really would rather to know about this up front before I make a decision to use Measurement Studio inn developing my Applications.

Thanks for the help....

LostInSpace,

On a typical machine, there are quite a few Windows Services running at any given point in time. As far as how many more will run while Measurement Studio is running, the only information that I can give you is that when I am running nothing and then launch Measurement Studio, my list of Windows Services remains the same.

If you could provide more information as to why you are trying to track the Windows Services that you have running, I might be able to better explains things to you.

Hello Renee: I just am deciding if I want to use Measurement Studio to develop my applications with or not. The way T&M services work is usually when the app is installed (Like Lab View or VEE or many of these types of programs) are installed on a computer the people writing the application suite (in this case NI) like to launch a lot of services. While this may in fact speed things up, it infuriates my types of end customers when all their available RAM is taken up even when the application is not running (because these services are persistent).

This happens with Lab View and Test Stand for sure, I know - 100 megs or more of services whether you are running the applications or not. If that wasn't enough, even when I removed the application the services were not removed on the PC and remained running.

These services get launched at Windows Boot Time not when the applications are running. So they are on your PC all the time.

I would think that there might be a list somewhere of the Windows services (or lack thereof) that Measurement Studio might be requiring.

Thanks again.

Measurement Studio on it's own does not require many services. The NI services that you will find after installation are from related NI products. However, some of them can be disabled if you prefer. National Instruments does not recommend disabling the services it installs.

I just installed MStudio on a clean system and here is what I found:

  • NI Application Web Server                                        Can be disabled if not using for applications; used for interapplication communication
  • NI Application Web Server (64-bit)
  • NI System Web Server                                             Similar to Application Web Server; Can be disabled if not using for applications; used for interapplication communication
  • NILM License Manager                                             Used for Licensing Measurement Studio; This cannot be disabled
  • National Instruments Domain Service                         Used for security; Not recommended to stop this service
  • National Instruments PSP Server Locator                   Used for interapplication communication; Can be disabled if not using
  • National Instruments Time Synchronization                Used for interapplication communication; Can be disabled if not using

Most of these are used for Network Variables and Datasocket for Measurement Studio and may be disabled if you are not using those.

Additionally, Measurement Studio requires Visual Studio and the .NET framework. I am not sure what services that installs, but I know there are at least a few.

PS: More services may be installed with other related NI products such as NI drivers.
