NI-DAQMX un-install killed my computer

I had a need to upgrade from an earlier version of NI-DAQMX to version 8.9.5.  The system was working prior to upgrade, but I needed to access some new functionality.  After installing NI-DAQMX 8.9.5, I found that MAX did not recognize the presence of my devices (2 of them), even though they showed up in the device manager as properly installed and working.   The error message on NI-DAQ indicated something about the MX database being broken and referred me to a knowledge base article (I had the number written down but cannot now find it).  Anyway, I decided to un-install version 8.9.5 and go back to the prior (working version).  I ran the un-install and was prompted to re-boot, which I allowed.  Boot sequence now gets to the screen where you are instructed to select among various safe and or normal boot options, using the arrow keys to select.  Keyboard is inoperative at this point - so interface times-out and starts the de-fault sequence which is supposed to be Normal boot to Windows - howerver the POST re-starts and I get back to the same point - over and over and over again (like the movie Groundhog Day - but wthout the laughts).  I verified that the KBD works by pressing the DEL to enter the CMOS editor.   So now I am completely dead in the water.

Hey Jason,

I am sorry you are running into this issue. However, instead of troubleshooting this on the forum, can you please give us a call and create a service request. You can do this by going to ni.com/support. This would allow National Instruments to thoroughly troubleshoot this issue.

Thanks

Sarah S.

Hi Sarah - thanks for the suggestion.  I did contact engineering support.  I would not say that I recieved a thorough trouble-shooting.  I was advised to re-move the data-acq board and try again.  This action made no difference.  So sorry, end of support.

Jason,

Are you using a USB keyboard?  I have seen some systems that the USB ports don't work until the OS is loaded.  Try finding an older keyboard (non-USB that plugs into the round keyboard port) and then you should be able to select safe mode.  You may then be able to get a better understanding of what's causing your system to crash.

Tom - that is a good suggestion.  However, the KBD worked before OS boot.  I verified this by entering the BIOS editing utility prior to OS boot.  Anyway, I have since sent the PC to our IT dept. and they could not get it to boot either.  They ended up re-installing the OS.  Perhaps, it is not fair to blame the NIDaqMX un-install for this episode - but it was the proximal cause and the whole sequence was very frurstrating.  If the MAX install had worked properly to begin with, then I would not have had to do the un-install, etc. etc.
