Are there any free OPC servers available for testing OPC client applications under development?

I'm new to OPC/datasockets/client-server etc and am writing an OPC client application in Visual C++ using NI's Measurement Studio for Visual C++ 6. This client application needs to communicate with an OPC data server (e.g. a data historian) to obtain process data.

Does anyone know any test servers that are freely available for download and also customisable so that they can be set up to provide the types of data required for testing my client application?

Or, perhaps I have to create my own test server?

Any advice/information is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

DataSocket comes with a simulation OPC Server called National Instruments.OPC Demo Server. It has items of different types, and items which spit out signals like Sine, Square wave, etc.

Also, there are many third-party OPC Server simulators out there. You may find the Matrikon one and their utilities useful:
