Can the MID-7604 drive a 4-phase stepper motor?

Hello,
Is the MID-7604 a suitable power stage for driving a 4 phase hybrid stepper motor? (namely those supplied by RS UK stock nos. 440-420 onwards and 191-8328 onwards). The 7604's documentation describes wiring for a 2 phase stepper, and explicitly states incompatibility with a 5-phase. There is no mention of 4-phase!
I would be very appreciative of any help on this matter!
Thanks, Dave

Dave,
Unfortunately, the 7604/02 only support 2 phase stepper motors. If you ned to control 4 phase motors, you may consider a third party drive incorporated with our 7344 and Universal Motor Interface 7764. I hope this helps.

Dave,

After reading over the description of these motors on the RS website, I believe these 4-phase motors are standard bifilar wound stepper motors with 6 or 8 wires. The 440-420 has a 6 wires and can be wired as described in the MID user manual. The 191-8328 has 8 wires which likely can be wired in series or in parallel. The series configurataion will favor high torque, low speed operation, while parallel wiring should provide better high speed performance. These motors should be compatible with the MID series drives.

The above comment essentially describes connecting the 4-phase motor as a 2-phase motor. Thus the MID drives cannot take full advantage of all the features of a 6 or 8 wire motor, but they should work well if wired correctly. Plese see the MID user manual.

Hello Dave, usually a unipolar 2 phase stepper motor is also commonly called a 4 phase stepper, by ignoring the central tap in each wire triad you should be able to use the unipolar motor in a bipolar fashion and this have the same functionality as a 2 phase stepper. This way you will be able to connect it to the 7604.

Hello,
I would like to know if unipolar stepper motors can be driven using MID 7604. I am aware that bi polar stepper motors can be driven using MID drives.I too have purchased RS Unipolar stepper motors size 16. Please guide me how to interface it with MID drives.

Thanks
Himanshu
