dc motor VS stepper motor

We are constructing a mininaturized machine tool now and we want the resolution about 0.5micron. We have some troubles in deciding which type of motor we should use.

Is there anyone can give some advices? Thanks a lot!

The resolution does not depend on the angular resolution of the motor only, but of course also on the mechanical setup - you can use step-down gears or threaded spindles to increase precision. Anyhow, I think for most precision positing tasks stepper motors are more suitable. If you need high repetition accuracy you should use incremental encoders as feedback to be able to detect precise position.

Without any relavant details provided, ceramic or piezo "inchworm' type motors can provide resolutions well below a micron. The company Burleigh comes to mind. You also need to consider speed, stability, and torque requirements.
