in most cases the Schmidt Trigger solution is not viable, as sin/cos encoders provide only a few or even only one signal period per revolution. In a worst case scenario with a Schmidt Trigger you will get only one sin/cos period per revolution, resulting in only 4 counts per revolution (with X4 encoding). That's why an external interpolator is required.

I was just thinking of the general problem of measuring the frequency of a sinewave.
So true, the comparator would not be enough for reading from this kind of encoders.
