Hello Scott,
Thanks for contacting National Instruments.
To export a device configuration in Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX), the device must be either simulated or installed physically. A device that is no longer physically in the machine (it will appear white with a red x) cannot have a configuration exported.
It is possible to replace the configuration for physically installed hardware with the configuration and tasks from a simulated device. When a configuration file is imported, MAX will check for conflicts between the imported configuration file and the current configuration. If there are conflicts, MAX will give you the option of replacing the configuration for the physical device with the configuration of the simulated device you are importing. The device will still be recognized as real, but will have all of the tasks and configurations specified for the simulated device attributed to it. The following screenshot shows what should appear.
Please post back if you have any questions or concerns.

Hello Scott,
Thanks for contacting National Instruments.
I am not sure what you meant by having a conflict that will not allow the import to continue. What steps are you going through to cause this behavior to occur? If you could include screenshots of this error, that would be most beneficial.
If you feel that DAQmx and MAX are missing important features, please submit a product suggestion. National Instruments takes product feedback from customers quite seriously.
