Export max config when device is not present

As a developer, I need to be able to support many different projects and configurations.  many times I may start out with the hardware, and not have it available later.   So my questions is how to export max config when hardware is not present in the system.  twice now I have tried to do this, and cant because Max says hardware is not present.

Now I Can go in and simulate the device associate channels and tasks to the simulated device then export, but then I have to change it again when I have hardware.

There has to be an easer way to do this.

Hello Scott,

Thanks for contacting National Instruments.

To export a device configuration in Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX), the device must be either simulated or installed physically.  A device that is no longer physically in the machine (it will appear white with a red x) cannot have a configuration exported.

It is possible to replace the configuration for physically installed hardware with the configuration and tasks from a simulated device.  When a configuration file is imported, MAX will check for conflicts between the imported configuration file and the current configuration.  If there are conflicts, MAX will give you the option of replacing the configuration for the physical device with the configuration of the simulated device you are importing.  The device will still be recognized as real, but will have all of the tasks and configurations specified for the simulated device attributed to it.  The following screenshot shows what should appear.

Please post back if you have any questions or concerns.

While this is about what I figured out it is a PAIN in A@@.  multi step export, then on the other end, it shows up as a conflict on import so you cant do it without removing device etc.  not something you can expect novice to do.  What happend to KISS.  What is problem with allowing export regardless of hardware pressence.

This process is arkward and non intuitive.

What does one do when import message says that there is a conflect with a device and cant continue.  Remove Hardware  I mean really remove it? open pc pull card, import, reinstall card and fix conflect?

I expect better from NI (yea sour grapes)

Hello Scott,

Thanks for contacting National Instruments.

I am not sure what you meant by having a conflict that will not allow the import to continue.  What steps are you going through to cause this behavior to occur?  If you could include screenshots of this error, that would be most beneficial.

If you feel that DAQmx and MAX are missing important features, please submit a product suggestion.  National Instruments takes product feedback from customers quite seriously.
