I need to make one correction to make sure the application is clear. As I stated in my original post the operation is to mimic a contact closure which the instrument senses to start. This is done by wiring it to the DAQ DIO and ground. In JB's not he says DIO and 5V which is not correct. So the added 1k resistor was added between the instrument and ground (not 5V). Just wanted to make sure I did not confuse anyone.
