PDA support for USB DAQ in 8.2

Hi All,

I noted from some older posts that the PDA module does not support USB devices.  I'd like to understand if this has changed as the webcast for handheld measurements

zone.ni.com/wv/app/doc/p/id/wv-153

shows that USB, compact flash and PCMCIA are supported.  What sort of cabling is needed and is the NI CompactDAQ supported?

The question is somewhat rhetorical coz the webcast definitely shows it going on the low cost USB hardware.  I am particularly interested in being able to hook up a PDA to the CompactDAQ to be able to utilize the nice fast modules like the 9401 which has a 100ns response.

Thanks in advance,
Peter

CompactDAQ is only supported under Windows 2k and XP.  PDA applications are supported with DAQmx Base, which currentlt supports a subset of NI's USB DAQ products.

Hello Peter,

I just wanted to expand on Chris' post a little bit. NI-DAQmx Base Version 2.2 for Pocket PC 2003/Windows Mobile 5 is the most recent version of our Multifunction DAQ driver for PDAs. You can find more information about this driver here. Specifically, the readme.htm file contains a list of supported devices. For your convenience I have copied it below:

Devices Supported by NI-DAQmx Base 2.2 for Windows Mobile:

  • NI DAQCard 6024E 200 kS/s, 12-bit, 16 AI channels, two AO channels, 8 DIO lines, two counter/timers
  • NI DAQCard 6062E 500 kS/s, 12-bit, 16 AI channels, two AO channels, 8 DIO lines, two counter/timers
  • NI DAQCard 6036E 200 kS/s, 16-bit, 16 AI channels, two AO channels, 8 DIO lines, two counter/timers
  • NI DAQCard AI-16E-4 (6041E) 500 kS/s, 12-bit, 16 AI channels, 8 DIO lines, two counter/timers
  • NI CF-6004 200kS/s, 14-bit, 4 AI channels, 4 DIO lines
  • NI USB-6008 12-bit, 10 kS/s, 8 AI channel, 12 DIO line, 1 event counter device
  • NI USB-6009 14-bit, 48 kS/s, 8 AI channel, 12 DIO line, 1 event counter device
  • NI USB-6501 24 DIO line, 1 event counter device

Chris, Matt,

thanks for your replies.  I will have a squizz at the driver readme.

This might be a little left of field but can the compact flash slot in the compact field point processors support compact flash IO modules?

thanks and regards

Peter

Hello Peter,

You cannot install the NI-DAQmx Base driver onto the Compact FieldPoint controller. So, Compact FieldPoint does not support the CompactFlash Data Acquisition module (NI CF-6004). I'm a little curious as to why you would want to use CompactFlash for I/O on Compact FieldPoint, since Compact FieldPoint already has a number of I/O modules. There are modules that cover the same set of functionality as the NI CF-6004, so you may want to consider using those.

Hi Matt,

the reason for the strange request is for applications that would benefit from the performance and features but don't need a stack of IO but do need a variety, ie analogs and digitals.  The compact flash IO is cheaper than a mix of compact fieldpoint IO plus a backplane isn't needed so the footprint is very small.  Thanks for your response anyhow.

Hello Peter,

While it may be possible to run a Compact FieldPoint controller without a backplane, we neither recommend nor support this operation. If you run the controller with the backplane, as recommended, it does not take much more room to include I/O modules. If you are looking for something smaller than that, it may be best to go with your original idea of a PDA with a USB Data Acquisition device.
