Thanks for your elaborate response. This is going to be very helpful in my making my choice.
After all the wondering discussion, the cRIO now seems like the most reliable, but analog multi-edge triggering option is not too bad. I am going to explore both options now, and if the price difference is not significant, I will probably get a cRIO system.
And yes, I will start with simulated devices first to help make the final decision.
