Why does DAQMx ask about Poisson's Ratio when configuring AI Strain channels?

Why does the DAQMx Create Virtual channel Method for creating an AI Strain channel ask about the Poisson's ratio of my measurement?  Is DAQMx/LabVIEW using this value for any of its calculations?  All I want is strain.  My customer is concerned because he's never had to specify this before, using Signal Express and MAX.  Thanks!

The Poisson ratio should be set for the material to be measured in order to assure proper readings. LabVIEW defaults to .3 (Steel)
