Windows 7 is compatible wit DAQ or only with DAQmx?

Solved!

Hellp? My CEO has a question about Windows 7 XP mode. He wonders if we can install NIDAQ driver in XP mode of Windows 7. But I think it won't work and you NI guys don't want to do so, because of your timeless efforts on NIDAQmx :smileyhappy:

If you have tested it already, let me know the result.

Hello anarkie,

In preparation for the Windows 7 release, we've been testing NI-DAQmx on Windows 7 for a while.  NI-DAQmx 9.0 works well on Windows 7, both 32- and 64-bit.  It's not officially supported yet, but our in-house testing shows excellent results.  Official support should be coming soon.

Traditional NI-DAQ will not work on Windows 7 and there are not plans to develope a version that will work on Windows 7.  XP Compatibility mode only helps with user-mode functionality.  Both NI-DAQmx and Traditional NI-DAQ use extensive kernal-mode calls that will not be affected by using XP Compatibility mode in Windows 7.

Hope this helps,

Glad to hear that there is ongoing testing in this area, as I am having difficulty myself.  I have the RTM of Windows 7 64-bit, and after installing DAQmx 9.0 and rebooting, the system freezes at the "please wait" message that displays during startup.  The system never reaches the login prompt.  Rolling back to the restore point before the installation allows the system to boot, but of course DAQmx is no longer installed.

If this is something you've experienced in your testing, then hopefully it will be fixed soon.  If not, let me know if there's any information I can provide that would help you.  The only components I was trying to install were the drivers, .NET support, and MAX.

I am going to try 8.6.5 to see if that works any better.

Hi Josh,

As Seth said in the previous post, Windows 7 will not be officially supported until the OS is released.  That being said, do you possibly have another computer to try this on?  Are you installing LabVIEW as well or only the drivers?

Hello all,

I should probably clarify a point I made in my last post.

What I mean here is that each driver has two components: a user-mode component and a kernel-mode component.  XP Compatibility Mode in Windows 7 creates a user-mode XP virtual machine.  Thus, Traditional NI-DAQ will install in XP Compatibility mode, as the user-mode should be identical to XP.  However, because the underlying kernel is still Windows 7, Traditional NI-DAQ will be unable to communicate with hardware in any way (in the best case scenario).  However, please not that we will not do any testing on Traditional NI-DAQ on Windows 7, so even the XP Compatibility Mode option may not work.  The best bet for Traditional NI-DAQ is to remain with XP while working to upgrade your application to NI-DAQmx.

I hope this clarifies the issue.

Hello Seth,

Thanks for the replies.  For the record, the 8.9.5 software does install without causing Windows 7 to become unbootable, which is good.  Also I should clarify - we only use DAQmx in our development.  I also dual boot with XP, which is my real development machine so it isn't a major problem.  However we are preparing for the eventual need for our software to run on the newer OS.  This thread discussed Windows 7, which is why I posted it here.  Should have pointed out that difference out sooner (DAQmx as opposed to NI-DAQ) as the original poster's question was about traditional NI-DAQ.  But I didn't think about it.  Sorry for the confusion.

Oh, and FYI: The OS has already been released (just not in all languages).  It isn't at Best Buy yet, but partners and volume license customers get it early.  So I assume you are referring to the general availability date as your target for supporting it.  It's a non-issue anyway, as we are not going to need to support it for at least a year after release.  I mainly just wanted to provide some feedback on the 9.0 installer, in case others have the same problem.

Again, thanks for the information.  I will give the installer another try in a few months and see if the problem I experienced is fixed.

Josh

Hi Josh,

Thanks for all the information and sorry for the confusion about official Windows 7 support.  We will support Windows 7 when we release software and drivers that have been verified and tested by R&D.
