how do i change output options of STARTSCAN signal on E series device?

i am trying to count TTL pulses connected to counter source only for the time period during which data acquisition is taking place. i need a signal that will either stay low or high during acquisition ( so that i can connect it to the gate of the counter). The device manual ( for PCI 6052E) says the STARTSCAN signal does this ( pg 4-30). but STARTSCAN also has another mode, in which it just pulses at the start of a scan. How do i choose the mode in which it stays high?

But it still doesn't solve my problem. i don't need to count the number of acquisitions ( that is what the knowledge base entry addresses); i need to count pulses from an external source during acquisition. what i need is some signal that will gate my external signal during acquisition. there dooesn't seem to be any such signal on the board.
