Counter Error

MultiSim 10.0.343 Student Edition running in XP
Created the tutorial example MyGettingStarted. Returns a simulation error
after the counter counts up to 2.  Ran "Getting Started 2.ms10" from the "Getting
Started" folder, and it ran fine. Checked all the connections and the parts
in my example, and they seem to be exactly the same as those in "Getting
Started 2.ms10."  How can I make my example work?  What settings am I missing?  I
followed everything correctly in the manual.

Replace the single LED labeled X1 with one from the Master Database under the Diodes category. The one you currently have in the circuit is a symbol only with no model and is not pulling up RCO on the 74HC190N as it should. This should correct the problem and get it going.

Thanks a lot!  It works now.  I previously got an LED from Master Database >> Basic >> SCH_CAP_SYMS, and it didn't work.  What is the purpose of the one from there compared to the one from Master Database >> Diodes >> LED?  The look of the LED in the NI example folder certainly looks like the one from SCH_CAP_SYMS, which didn't work.

Also, is there a way to find out where an element is originated from in the workspace?  For example, I want to find out where the LED in "Getting Started 2.ms10" came from since even though it looks different from the one in the Diodes family, the example still simulates fine.

Thanks in advance.

The difference between the two diodes is the fact that the ones under the Diodes category have a spice model that allows them to simulate. The ones in the other category do not have spice models and therefore will not simulate.  I am not sure what the purpose is for the SCH_CAPS_SYMS and what they would be useful for.

For the question about locating where a part originated. Right click on any component and the click properties and then hit the Replace button in the lower left corner and that will usually take you to the place in the database where that part came from.

I hope some of this helps

THANK YOU!  If I may, I realized that only one design file is shown in the Hierarchy tab on my laptop, whereas multiple ones are shown on other PCs.  Is there any settings to show multiple designs?  I have to individually open different design files every time I need them.  Thanks as always.

There are possible 2 ways to accomplish this. One is to  open each file without closing the previous file. This method is what I use when  examining circuits in just a single sesson type format. The other way is to start a new project and add the files to the project. The second method allows for you to save the project and then re-open it with all the files selected still available later without having to browse through the hard drive to find them.

I hope this is what you are refering to and that it helps.

Thanks again for your insightful advice.  My original question was your first method: "One is to open each file without closing the previous file. This method is what I use when  examining circuits in just a single sesson type format."

I was already doing it, but MultiSim simply refreshes the workspace and shows one design only.  I have attached two screenshots: Multi_Designs.bmp and Single_Design.bmp.  In "Multi_Designs.bmp," you can see that I have three designs all shown up in the hierarchy window.  Also, there are three tabs in the workspace window as well.  This is what happens on another PC.  The other screenshot "Single_Design.bmp" is what I have on my laptop, and it shows only one design.  If I go to File and open another design without closing the current one, MultiSim simply replaces the current design with the new one, and shows only one design.

I even uninstalled and reinstalled MultiSim and still the same.  I installed the same copy of MultiSim on both machines.  Can you share your wisdom once again?  Thanks as always.

I just found out that Student Edition would show only one design at at time.  Thanks for your time anyway.

Are you able to create a Project? Look under the FILE menu and see if  NEW PROJECT is listed in that menu. If it is then you can create a project and add as many files to it as you want. The neat thing is that you can save it and re-open it and still have all  your files still availabe. I have the Power Pro Edition so it depends upon your particular version as to what you have avavailble.

Yes.  I can see the Project option and can save many files under it.  I guess I just have to use that method to keep multiple designs shown.  SE doesn't allow multiple designs in the Hierarchy window.  Thanks as always for the GREAT advice!
