hide mechanical layer

the help says:

To hide a layer in the workspace, click the layer’s check box twice. The check mark disappears, and the elements on that layer are hidden.

This works fine on the PCB layers, but clicking the checkbox on the mechanical layers has no effect. 

How do I hdie a mechanical layer?

Well for no discernable reason it suddenly started working (actually it started working as soon as I brought my boss down and asked him how to make it work) - I'm not sure what changed, so I have no way of tracking down the state of the software.  If I can find a repro I'll post it.
